Surname deciphering

Post by Rab » Sat May 12, 2007 2:51 pm

Hi all,

My poor wee eyes are having trouble with a surname- the last on the list in the pic below. I've got a surname stuck in my head which I know is not the correct one but can't see past it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

To illustrate how bad my eyes are this is from a 1920 US Federal census return which I have had for over a year. The second bottom person is an ancestor named John Marr and I've only ever known that his "wife" was named Mary. All this time I've had this and never noticed her full name was recorded below his till last night.

Thanks

Hi Hugh,

It looks like Sennett to me but my eyes probably aren't any better than yours :?

Rab:

She is indexed as Sennett, Mary. Born @1871, Ireland. I'll take a peek at earlier Census' and see if she is there.

Rab:

sorry, should have said birthplace New Jersey, father and mother were born in Ireland. There are a few surnames on the page with "S" that the "S" is similar to your Mary.

Hi,

Thanks for the information. The places of birth match up with the 1910 census where the birthplace is also New Jersey and parents are both Irish. At that time though she was recorded as Mary J Marr as she was back in 1889 as a witness at the wedding of John's brother William in Brooklyn.

I'll try going with Sennett as I've going to skip back through the census to 1870/1880 to see if I can find her with her parents.

Cheers

Rab
