Recently I was able to trace my great grandmother's family back to the Deskford area in Banffshire. One of her uncles, Alexander Longmuir was a master miller at the Mill of Pott, Monquhitter according the census records from 1851 until his death in 1891. I've found information on Monquhitter though it seems to have vanished from the map, but I would like to know if Pott is a real name or is it a "census shortened" version of something else? I can't find anything close to it on my map.

Hi Carol,
Monquhitter was a parish without a town/village of the same name, which is why you may have trouble finding it on a map. The main village of the parish is Cuminestown.
To see Mill of Pot on a modern map, go to Ordnance Survey map showing Cuminestown and Mill of Pot
And Deskford at Ordnance Survey map showing Kirktown of Deskford
By calculation (remember Pythagoras Theorem ), 379325,850690 (Mill of Pot) and 350875,861535 (Deskford) are 30.5km (about 19 miles) apart as the crow flies.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: Monquhitter and the Mill of Pott
I think that you may owe me money , as one of Alexander Lopngmuir's predecessors defaulted on the payment for a load of grain supplied by my 4ggrandfather, and then swiftly emigrated ........speleobat2 wrote:Recently I was able to trace my great grandmother's family back to the Deskford area in Banffshire. Andrew,
Thanks again. I have an ordinance survey map which I bought in a bookstore. It does fine on towns and roads, but not details like small older places such as Mill of Pott. The online version is much better so I bookmarked the sight you referred me to.
The only py I do is the kind you bake in an oven!
David,
That load of grain was moldy and full of mice! Eeeeeeeeeeeck!!!!!!!!!
Besides which, SP is getting my money right now. Anytime you see an upward blip is Scotland's economy it's because I'm sitting at my computer madly clicking away on those VIEW buttons!
