to have someone appear on the same census twice?

I've found an interesting one here - on the Hislop clan again

OK........

Thomas and Sarah Hislop had quite a few children - one of them being Katie Hislop born 30 Aug 1890. She appears on the 1891 census with the rest of the family, as Kate - fine .

Then ages ago the 1901 census, I eventually found Kate Hislop in the City Poorhouse, she was the age and birth location I was looking for and I couldn't find her with any of the rest of the family so I assumed she was the Kate I was looking for.

Meanwhile - I discovered Sarah Hislop (Kates mum), had upped sticks, leaving her husband, and moved in with another Thomas this time McLean.

She took two of the Hislop children with her, and had a further two with Mr McLean.

I found them on the 1901 census living in Edinburgh, all under the new name of McLean, and as I expected, no Kate - believing she was in the Glasgow City Poorhouse (checked the records by the way and can't find who put her in).

Then .................. when I was trawling other family members I found Rose Wright (Sarah Hislop/McLean's mother) on the 1901 census with her second husband, William Wright (although they didn't marry until 5.9.1913), and with them is a "Kate McLean" born 1890 in Hamilton, Lanark. She is stated as Williams step grand-daughter, which again is accurate.

I can't find any other Kate Hislops born around 1901 in Hamilton who the first one maybe - so is it possible that Kate appeared on the same census twice?

Hi Miss Poohs,

I have heard of it before where someone was enumerated twice in a census, in different locations. Such as once in the family home where she normally lived; and once elsewhere, where she actually was (visiting?) on the night of the census. That may be the case for your Kate, although difficult to prove. If she was not at home with her immediate family that night, she should not have been named as being there.

Next time I go to the Mitchell I'll look under Wright for an admission to the Poorhouse, it maybe her gran that put her in.

I've checked everything else and "nothing" - so why not eh?

Hi Miss Poohs

I have the very same with my Smith's, and it found me an extra person I did not know. I searched for Peter Smith aged 7, and to my surpise only two turned up. One was my Peter shown with his mum Margaret, Dad John and brothers and sisters. I had a look at the other-must have had lots of credits-and it was a 7 year old Peter shown as nephew. As the lady of the house had a family name - Christian - I took a guess and had a look for a death certificate under McAulay nee McFarlane, and you guessed it Christian was one of my McFarlane's - Margaret Smith's sister. So for me it was a piece of luck, but was puzzled about how he could have been in two different places. I do remember reading that sometimes people were confused and recorded who were in the family rather than who were present and this was an early 1861/1871 census.

Yes. I have Peter MacPhie on the Census in Kilmuir and also with his Mother and sister in Edinburgh.
I am just guessing that his wife who was illiterate just gave his name to the Census taker and he accepeted her word for it. By the following census he was back in Kilmuir.
