Census Release 1911 - 1931 …..

Post by Lorna Allison » Wed Jun 20, 2007 10:47 pm

Hello

I had already heard via TS that the 1911 Census would be made public early, but today read the following in the newsletter from the G&WS fhs.

"Downing Street is offering a petition for BRITISH CITIZENS, EXPATRIATES and ARMED FORCES to sign, which would reduce the census release period from 100 years to 70 years, thus making the 1911, 1921 and 1931 censuses available immediately. If you would like to add your name, please copy and paste this link onto your browser or just click on it and fill in your details. Please also forward this link to anyone else who may be interested."

Hi Lorna
This was mentioned on the forum a couple of months ago and turned out to be one of those subjects which people felt quite strongly about - both for and against. The petition you refer to is now closed:
This petition is now closed, as its deadline has passed. Deadline to sign up by: 08 March 2007 – Signatures: 23,604
As far as I remember, though I may have this wrong, there was a possibility the English census would be released early but the Scottish census would continue to stand by the 100 year closure promised to those persons who took part in that census.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lorna
G&WS FHS seem to be a bit behind the times on that one!
Not your fault!

Best wishes

Never mind that the response related purely to the situation for England & Wales, - I was never clear if that was the case with respect to the petition.........

GROS are no puzzled to hear that TNA will "....respond to certain requests for information on the 1911 census under the Freedom of Information Act." That obviously doesn't apply to Scotland, never mind that the equivalent Scottish Freedom of Info legislation specifically excludes census info from FoI requests.
