Christie Family .....

Post by Raylen » Tue Jul 03, 2007 6:00 am

Hello to you all. First time here so please be gentle with me :)

I have reached a dead end in trying to find information on the Christie family.
I have confirmed that Samuel Christie was born abt 1829 in Stirling and his parents were listed as Robert Christie and Mary Christie.( I think that Christie is Mary's married name, so I don't know her maiden name) He married and came to Australia in late 1852. He married Robina Aitken before he left Scotland.
I would like to get some details of other family members of Samuel.(I think there maybe a Robert, John and Alexander, though not confimed)

Can anyone please help me find them on a census and find mother Mary's maiden name.

Appreciate any help or advice,

Raylen

Hi Raylen

Welcome to the wonderful world of Scottish genealogy :!:

TalkingScot is the happiest bunch of addicts on the planet and love problems.

First off - Don't rule out Christie as Mary's maiden name as in small communities there often were marriages of distantly related people.

Have you looked at FreeCen as a way of verifying the family on the 1841 census ? That would be a first step to checking on other children. The beauty of FreeCen is you can search (for free :!: ) and trawl through various households in the area until you hit on likely ones then follow up on IGI (again free :!: ) to see what happens to them.IGI only takes you up to around 1875 though.
Once you have located likely candidates only then do you have to go to the pay sites like scotlandspeople.
People in lowland Scotland tended to stick quite faithfully to the traditional naming patterns so that is your best guide in searches.

Good hunting

Hi Raylen
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D
I have confirmed that Samuel Christie was born abt 1829 in Stirling and his parents were listed as Robert Christie and Mary Christie.( I think that Christie is Mary's married name, so I don't know her maiden name)
Can I ask where you confirmed Samuel's birth?

I had a quick look on Freecen at http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
but I'm not seeing a Samuel with father Robert, but not all areas are online yet, so that is maybe why. There is a 15yr old Samuel on Scotlands People who does not appear to be on freecen, but the 15yr old one is on Orkney, so does not seem very likely.
He married and came to Australia in late 1852. He married Robina Aitken before he left Scotland
The marriage you mentioned is an extract on IGI www.familysearch.org
  • SAMUEL CHRISTIE
    Marriages:
    Spouse: ROBINA AITKEN
Marriage: 28 MAY 1852 Torphichen, West Lothian, Scotland
Best wishes
Lesley

First of all.....thank you for the warm welcome.

Thank you Russell for your advice. I have had a look on these lists, but alas, no sign of them. I do note that a lot of the Stirling records aren't online yet so they may well be lurking somewhere.

Thanks Lesley for your help.
Samuel's details are from a death certificate and from cemetery records here in Australia. I think my frustration comes from there being so may "Christies'". I get so confused :?

Oh well, back to the drawing board for me

Russell

Thanks for your advice on the possibilty that Mary's maiden name may have been Christie, the same as her married name.

I have come across a marrriage
Robert Christie married Mary Christie 8/11/1825 St James,Westminster,London
The time frame seems to be about right ( Samuel born abt 1829)
so now I'm off on this new little search
I'm not even sure where to start with this new information :-k

Hello again everyone.

I need your help please. Can someone tell me where I should go to try and get some information on the elusive Samuel Christie. Given that I have the death certificate information and searched the 1841 census in Scotland and England and can find no trace of him or his family.

I'm at my wits end........help me please [sigh]

Hi Raylen,
Welcome to Talking Scot! :D

Could this be Samuel in 1851?

Westfield Farm, Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire
Mary Moffat, 60, Head, born Kirkintelloch, Dumbartonshire, Farmer of 120 acres emplying 4 labourers
Marrion Moffat, 22, daughter, born Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire, Farmer Daur
Joseph Moffat, 20, son, born Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire, Farmer son
Alexander Moffat, 17, son, born Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire, Farmer son
Samuel Christie, 22, servant, born Nk, Stirlingshire
John Dow, 20, servant, born Glasgow, farmer servant
Peter Barrat, 25, servant, born Ireland, farmer labourer
Agnes McLean, 20, servant, born Mall, Argyleshire, house servant

Do you know what Samuel's profession was? Too bad he married before 1855 or the certificate would have given his parents' names :(

There is a family in Northumberland in 1841, father Robert, mariner, but mother Anne... :-k
Children:
Hir??, 20, engineer
Samuel, 15, apprentice
John, 10 apprentice
Robt, 8

Only Robt and Ann were born in the county. The others were born outside the county... if it is Samuel, it should say born in Scotland though. Hmmm.

The only likely one I can see in Scotland is this (but if Isabella is the mother, it doesn't fit). Since the 1841 census doesn't give the relationship amongst the people, there is no way of knowing.

1841
West Hillton Cower, St Ninians, Stirlingshire
Isabella Christie, 55, born Stirlingshire, Farmer
Samuel Christie, 16, born Stirlingshire, Ag Lab
Alexander Christie, 8, born Stirlingshire, Ag Lab
George Cunning, 40, born Scotland, Ag Lab
George Clevenson, 15, born Stirlingshire, Ag Lab
Ann Canns, 15, born Stirlingshire, FS
Jean Cochran, 15, born Stirlingshire, FS

On the other hand.. could this be Robt and Mary in 1841 with some younger siblings of Samuel?

Lower Bridge Street, St Ninians, Stirlingshire
Robert Christie, 35, born Stirlingshire, Cabinet Maker
Marcy Christie, 35, born Stirlingshire, Cabinet Maker
John Christie, 3, born Stirlingshire
Robert Christie, 1, born Stirlingshire

Well, that's my contribution of the day... hope some of this helps :D
All the best,
Sarah

Thank you so much Sarah.

I'll certainly follow through looking at the information you posted.

It seems that the family came to Australia in the 1850's.

I have now obtained a copy of Robert's death certificate but I don't know that this information will help all that much to find the rest of the family.

Robert Christie-Blacksmith died 1863 age 30 years in Melbourne,Australia
Father - Robert Christie - Cabinet Maker
Mother - Mary Christie
Informant - Alexander Christie, Brother
Born in Stirling NK. Resident of Australia 6 years

Maybe someone can help me find something on Robert that will help to track down Samuel and his family

Thanks
Raylen

Aha! So he could be the cabinet maker I found in 1841 :D

Here they are in 1851:

1851
Lower Bridge Street, Stirling, Stirlingshire
Robert Christie, 49, head, born in Stirling, Cabinet-maker
Margaret Christie, 44, wife, born in Stirling
John Christie, 12, son, born in Stirling, scholar
Margaret Christie, 7, daughter, born in Stirling, scholar

and again in 1861. Note that Robert's wife is Mary this time:

1861
20 Belfield, New House, St Ninians, Stirling
Robert Christie, 58, head, born Stirling, cabinet maker
Mary Christie, 53, wife, born St Ninians
Margret Christie, 16, daughter, born in Stirling, scholar

Since both Robert and Mary lived past 1855, their death certificates should be helpful!
All the best,
Sarah

Hello Sarah and thank you so much for the information.

I think you have certainly found the elusive Christie family of mine :D
Since my last post I have got a death certificate for Mary and it states she was born in St Ninians in about 1810 and arrived in Australia in 1873. Unfortunately it lists her own details instead of her parents so I'm none the wiser about them BUT it does say that Robert Christie married Mary Christie nee Christie!
So now I'm hoping someone might help me find the name of Mary Christie's mother.
Her death certificate also mentions her children as:Robert,Alexander,John, Catherine,Robert,John,Thomas and Margaret so maybe they might all pop us somewhere too

Really appreciate your help and all the friendly people on this site.
Thanks again,

Raylen
