The long way around to the 1861 Census.

Post by speleobat2 » Thu Jul 26, 2007 5:29 pm

Recently I was looking for census records for my 2x great uncle John Longmuir. I found him in Aberdeen in 1841 as a single blacksmith. Then I found him married with a 2 month old daughter in 1851, but the family disappeared by 1861. I found death certificates for both John in 1865 and his wife Margaret in 1868, but couldn't pull a record for the 1861 Census on Ancestry. I went to SP and found it, faint but readable so I searched for John's next door neighbor John Campbell age 37 at 5 Fish Street. His record came right up and I clicked on the View others on this page button. There they were: John, Margaret, Elizabeth and James LANGOVENIR at 5 Fish Street. This is the farthest out misspelling that I've run into yet, but searching for his neighbor worked! The Ancestry records are much more readable than the originals and I wouldn't bother but I'm sending copies of all these papers to my sister.

Keep turning over those stones!

Hi Carol,

The Ancestry records may be a lot more readable, but given the amount of transcription errors that they hold, I would always want to see the original image.

All the best,

Ah Andrew - your Mum must be proud of you! What a kind and thoughtful way with words, you have. Gave my chuckle a workout

The Ancestry records have provided many chuckles for me which tempers the frustration somewhat. I look at the originals for all the key people and then the others as I can afford them. I enjoy a good puzzle and my hair is already gray anyway!

There are some real howlers!

My GGGrandfather was, according to Ancestry, born in Relehatton, Cryafeshire

That's certainly not what it says on the OPR!

Anyone?

This one has me bemused and confuddled. It has rumbled round my brain for a couple of days and I still haven't a clue.

   OK then!

He was born on 14 April 1837 in Toberonochy, Luing Island, Kilbrandon & Kilchattan, Argyllshire so I'm not sure which part of that is "Relehatton" but the "Cryafeshire" has to be Argyllshire

Good this  , innit

Mary

That is both funny and sad. There are folks who have paid good money to ferret out information, often without a clue about some of the names of places their rellies stayed in 100 years ago.
I would demand my money back if I had joined up.

I wonder if GGGfather's cottage is still standing in Toberonochy. A few have fallen, or been knocked down but some look much the same as they did then.

Now I'm nosey though :-k Was he involved in the slate quarrying ?
The quarry is now a verry, deeep pond.

I'd been unable to find that census entry for him till I removed placenames - really frustrating.

As to his cottage - Wha kens, but I lived on Seil, the adjoining island for four years till 2005. Wasn't till I came back to Bristol that I discovered that branch came from there  Bad timing or what?

He was actually a Lithographic printer, but his father and grandfather were slate quarrymen. Must say I've been curious about how he got into that trade.
