Help with 1851 census .....

Post by skaville » Mon Jul 30, 2007 7:55 pm

Does anyone know how i can find a family in 1851. I tried there surname of Cassey & Casey. I have the ward No. etc and want to view the census. On Ancestry theyre transcribed as Carrey family.
John 42
Mary 14
Alley 7 (not sure if this a boy or girl)

GLASGOW

Ward No. 560, Enum 5, Page 10, Lines 10-12.

I am trying to see what his job etc is and i only have that index info.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark

Guess what? SP has them as Carrey too...

1851 CARREY ALLAY F 7 BARONY GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 622/00 161/00 010

but I really think it does say Cassey. John is a shoemaker.

Best wishes
Jean

Cheers for that. Ive now got the image AND found his death cert 6 years later. It appears he remarried and his 'stepson' registered the death. Couldnt read his surname and i think they married before 1855. But he didnt know him and there wasnt an inquest so nobody knows what he died of!!
Now to find out what happened to the daughter Alley.
Thanks again.

Don't rule out that his first wife could have been married twice.
Any mention of a wife on the death certificate?

On his death cert in 1857 it says married but doesnt give the wifes name. The stepsons name looks like William Goahely, i presume thats not it though. His death is unknown and his parents unknown. The cemetary looks like Dalbeth. Their address is 33 New St, Glasgow. Maybe look who is there in 1861.
In 1851 John is a widow and has his 2 daughters living with him, Mary who i know about and 7 year old Alley. They are living at 35 Main St.

There's only 215 folks enumerated at 33 New Street in Calton District Glasgow in 1861 :? ....and none of them are a Cassey, Carrey, or Goahely.....or reasonable variants.

Best wishes

Maybe young Alley went back to Ireland, although most likely into service as she would have been 13 when her dad died.

John Cassey (journeyman shoemaker) married Catherine Code around 1853, and the stepson registering his death is Catherine's son William Code (like you, cannot make out spelling of William's surname, on John's death cert. but is probably taken from pronunciation)
As far as I have found John Cassey was married twice before, taken from marriage certs of his daughters:-
Mary (mother Mary Collins) m John Kearney (Cairney)
Alley, is Alice my GGmother (mother Margret McQuade) m James Boswell in Bridgeton. Subsequently settled in Coatbridge

Hiya Philip,
It seems i may have the wrong family after all this time now. My Mary Casey married a Peter Cameron on 13th Nov 1853. I thought the census taker has just mispelt Casey as Cassey. Very confusing, my Mary Casey was born in Ireland. I cant seem to find my census of Peter & Mary, may have to check it all over again to see if the census gives me any more details. Or maybe try and find her death cert.

Mark, this is a possible for Mary in 1851 - only for the reason that her mother is Sarah.
But as you say; your Mary's DC is needed.

This census is a wee bit confusing on Ancestry; but that's not unusual....
It has James (30) as the son of a James Davidson (40)...who is on schedule 70.
