Glasgow School for Girls? .....

Post by ladybird » Thu Aug 02, 2007 9:18 am

Hi folks
I have this from ancestry 1881 census and am wondering about the address? I've googled with no luck except to find a women's prison in Duke Street in the right time period. Looks pretty grim from the pics

Was there a school in the same street :?:

1881 census
Was Janet in a Reform School??
Janet Townsley
Age: 13
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1868, Inmate, Female
Where born: Scotland, Parkhead
Registration Number: 644/5
Registration district: Blackfriars
Civil Parish: Glasgow Blackfriars
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 71 Duke Street, Glasgow
Occupation: Scholar
ED: Glasgow School for Girls
Glasgow Blackfriars; ED: Glasgow School for Girls; Line: 2; Year: 1881.

If this is my Janet Townsley her family were all Travellers so it's not impossible that she was "had up" for something. I've not been able to find any of the rest of the family

Ohhh 'eck! Oh dear! Poor wee girl!

Reading through that thread it doesn't look as if there's much hope of finding out what she was in for and for how long. Maybe I'd better check the 1891 census.

Thanks Andrew

Have just found out why I can't find her family on the 1881 census.
All her family except possibly 1 sister, who I haven't found yet, were dead by 1875.
2 brothers and 1 sister died as children, her mother died of pneumonia and her father died of accidental poisoning (not bad for my 1st RCE, lots of info on there)
 She certainly was a poor wee girl though, no wonder she got into trouble!
