I need help from someone with the knowledge of passenger list and ship sailing from Scotland to Australia.
My 3 x great grandparents John and Betsy ROSS and their daughter Margaret were in the 1851 SCotland census. some time after the 1851 census took place and between 1854 they arrived in Australia. I have no idea what port they sailed into when they arrived.
But they had 2 sons born- William Dec 1854 and John c1856 in victoria,Australia.
I also know that in OCt 1861 the 5 of them - John,Betsy,Margaret,William,John all arrived in Otago, new Zealand.
I would be most grateful to anyone with the knowledge to help me out with some pieces of the puzzle on when my family arrived in Australia.
regards
Gina

Hello Gina,
This National Archives document explains the situation re outbound passenger lists
“Generally speaking, emigration passenger lists between 1776-1889 have not survived”
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... ID=106&j=1
The Public Records Office Victoria has immigration records – you can search here.

The BOURNEUP arrived September 1852 with eight Ross’s. I think I can see your three there.

ROSS BETSY, 34, SEP, 1852, BOURNEUP, 6, 21.

ROSS MARY, 45, SEP, 1852, BOURNEUP, 6, 21.
ROSS WILLIAM, 38, SEP, 1852, BOURNEUP, 6, 21.
Is the next one the 1861 trip to NZ? The names seem to fit but the ages look very wobbly.

I’ve never had any reason to access these Public Record Office Victoria records. I’m not sure what the Assisted Immigration records contain in Victoria but in the same time period in NSW they had ship, arrival port and date, departure port and date, name, native place, parents and whether living and where, age, calling, health, religion, read & write, relatives in colony, complaints re voyage, etc
I’ll have a further look around.

Gina,
This thread gives alternative names for the ship BORUCARRY, BOURNEUP or BORNEUF.
Some link to the Highlands and Islands Emigration Scheme?
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/AU ... 1133176342
But first check out this freebee without delay as it could end any moment.
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 8396#88396
Search for BORNEUF in British Newspapers 1600-1900 and you’ll find an article describing its departure etc. in the Liverpool Mercury, Tuesday, May 25, 1852.
Check out all your other family stuff while you’re there if you haven’t already done so.

There is very little information on the Vic Fiche in relation to unassisted passengers - often not much more than name & age. The information similar to what Alan mentions is usually found for assisted passengers. The PRO fiche are available in a number of libraries in Australia & may be available at LDS centres (but I haven't checked there).
I cannot see a birth registration in Victoria for William, but this seems to be John

This is very interesting, having searched for my g grandfather who left Scotland for Australia in 1860 and nothing known of him until 1864 when he died in Melbourne Hospital. I have his death certificate with absolutely no information on it other than his name. Now at last I can see why I have been unable to find anything of him. If he had not paid his own way I would have been successful in finding the information I need.

Thanks Trish,
We have never found any record of William's birth. But on his wedding certificate he stated that he was born in Victoria, Australia. So maybe it was never recorded!!
My cousin said she found John Ross born c1856, but in Ballarat.
You said it had Ashby, which I googled and it was a surburb of Geelong, and they arrived in Geelong 1852.
could you tell me the website that you found John's birth, please
regards
Gina

Hi Lizzie
It seems the powers that be only kept tabs on those they gave money to (rather like today
). If you paid your own fare, there are few details - although many such immigrants can be found through land grants or land purchases. My own research has shown that most of my Scottish folks came to Australia in search of land & purchased same not long after they arrived.
Hi Gina
I actually took the birth index from the AVRI (Aust Vital Records) which covers BDMs in Victoria, NSW, WA and Tas in the first years of european settlement, to about 1888 (WA and Tas go a little longer). You can buy this in UK for 7 pounds from the LDS people.
The Victorian indexes are online but they are pay to view. You can search for free, but it costs $1AU to look at a page of results from the index and $17.50 to download a certificate. You MAY get some useful information from the 1856 certificate - civil registration started in Victoria in 1853 and their certificates are very similar to the 1855 Scottish ones - although I am not sure if the early ones contain all the details.
http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/home
Use the links - Search Family History indexes and
- Purchase and download an image
At the moment I think $1AU is about 45p
If William was perhaps older than stated, I wonder if he was born at sea or before civil registration - There are marine indexes on the above site. but it seems they start in 1853 - after the arrival of your family
