It all depends if they were Catholic or Protestant !!

If Catholic then civil records for such marriages only started in 1864; but there may very well be parish records in 1863.

But, if Protestant, then civil records for marriages started in 1845, - contact GRONI for details, - see http://www.groni.gov.uk/ .

If he was born in Scotland, perhaps his parents died in Scotland too.

If so, their death certificates should have their parents' names that could help you get at least other names to work from.

Any census data could help too - if they gave a more specific birthplace. for themselves or any older siblings.

Hi Nancy
It is only one source, and not a cheap one at that, but this site:
http://www.brsgenealogy.com/index.php?&set=yes
suggests that the Derry records are not online on their site yet, so if you had been searching there, even if the record existed, it will not yet show up. I think they have a mixture of Church and post 1864 data, but I'm not sure what they have is everything which exists for each area in any case.

Apart from checking for deaths for the couple as Wilma suggested, if your couple lived in the Glasgow area, I'd also be off the the Mitchell to check the poor releif applications which may be able to give you some further family information. Many many Irish families did apply for relief, probably due to arriving in Scotland with very little and having no extended family support to rely on, so it is a good place to try. If you find a poor relief application, it can often give all sorts of little details which you would be unlikley to find elsewhere.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks again,I joined for a month at emeraldancestors, and thought id pay £12 for the cert, however the cert did not have their adds or parents on it,as being Catholic, records didnt start till April 64.
I did get names of witnesses though,so that may mean something!!
I now have church name and parish and district :)
I shall try Mitchell this coming wk if I can manage so many thanks for all your help

Just a wee update on my gr grandpa James Cassidy.
I noticed on his 1899 death cert in Paisley, there was an RCE on it and he had died of burns in the infirmary after 20 hrs.I wondered if this had been an accident at work or maybe a house fire,so off I went to library ro see if I could find anything out!!
They brought out large bound volume of Paisley and Renfrewshire Gazette but no luck. Then when I opened the Paisley Daily Express for eighteenth June, day he died, there it was staring me in the face!!
Headlines were,Maxwellton St Fire, man burned to death.
It said a man called cassidy, whose home was destroyed had died of severe burns that morning
Very quick reporting then!!
I felt I had to know what happened, but when I saw it in print, this was my gr grandpa here, and I felt choked.
To think the agony he must have gone through, and especially in those days.
After trawling through his families births,im now seeing bits of info,I hadnt noticed before!
I havent been doing too much research recently, but I remember reading here, after a break, you can sometimes start afresh, and BOBS YOUR UNCLE :) So fingers crossed theres more for me to find :)
