Crombie in Drumanaghan, Loughinisland, County Down.....

Post by John Crombie » Fri Feb 02, 2007 10:47 am

I am trying to trace the Crombie family who I believe were from this townland.

John Crombie married Susannah Park and had the following children..

Thomas born 15 Nov 1840
Hannah born c. 1842
Martha born c. 1843
Isabella born c. 1848
John born c. 1850

They appear in the 1851 Census at Kirkoswald, Ayrshire.

Can anyone help establish this family or point me in the right direction for further research.

Thanks

John

Hello John, and welcome to Talking Scot!:D Looks like they came over to Scotland some time between 1846 and 1849, then went back for a time around 1854 when David was born. Or perhaps Susanna just went home for the birth. Here they are in 1861, in case you don't have it:

1861 22 Kirkoswald Village North Side, Kirkoswald, Ayr
John Crombie, 50, head, born County Down, Ireland, Pauper Formerly Lab
Susanna Crombie, 54, wife, born County Down, Ireland
Thomas Crombie, 22, son, born County Down, Ireland, shoemaker
Hannah Crombie, 20, daughter, born County Down, Ireland, sewer of Ayrshire Needlework
Martha Crombie, 18, daughter, born County Down, Ireland, sewer of Ayrshire Needlework
Isabella Crombie, 15, daughter, born County Down, Ireland, Domestic Serv
John Crombie, 12, son, born Kirkoswald, Ayrshire, Scholar
David Crombie, 7, son, born County Down, Ireland, Scholar

Do you have the marriage or death certificates of any of the children? It could give you more info on the parents.

Sorry I can't help you with the Irish end of things, but I'm sure someone will be along soon who knows more.

All the best,
Sarah

Hello John,

I thought I'd seen the name John Crombie before, one of the Members, Nina, was looking for a John Cromie but when I was trying to help her with that I came across all these poor relief applications:-

Crombie John 45 Ireland 72 2170847-3 married
Crombie John 47 Ireland 72 2170847-3 married to Susannah Park
Crombie John 49 Ireland 72 2170847-3 married to Susannah Park
Crombie John 44 Ireland 4 2170847-5 married
Crombie John - Ireland 13 2170847-5 married
Crombie John 63 Ireland 102 2170847-6 widow, aka Crummie
Crombie John 64 Ireland 108 2170847-6 widower aka McCrummie
Crombie John 66 Ireland 134 2170847-6 widower aka Crummie

That's all the information it gives. Obviously the Susannah Park ones are yours but the others maybe too.

You may want to email North Ayrshire Library, they are very helpful. They can be contacted on:- localhistory@north-ayrshire.gov.uk

They will send you copies of the applications, some of which can shatter brickwalls. There is a cost involved but it is very reasonable.

Good luck
Donna

Yes Donna it was me, but a different John Crombie!

And a big wave and welcome to the present John Crombie!

Oh...and I can vouch for the excellent service at North Ayrshire Library too!

Hi Folks and thanks for the welcome and the replies.

I have all of the information above already but thanks anyway. All of the census returns from 1861 onwards gave place of birth as County Down but the recent release of the 1851 Census images on Scotlands People gave the name of the townland "Drumanaghan" as well, hence my request. I know that the name Crombie was not common in Ireland but it could be a variation of Cromie which was very common.

I have been doing this for many years now but with the new information on the 1851 census I feel that I am within touching distance of making the Irish connection.

Again many thanks

John

Hello John,

If you are in possession of those Ayrshire Poor Relief applications it should state their religious denomination on there....well the ones I have do.

As mine were C of I and from County Down I was able to trace a marriage certificate through AncestryIreland.com I believe if they were Catholic it is a little more tricky.

I take it you'll have been on Ros Davies' Co Down genealogy site. Another alternative it to contact Banbridge Genalogy Services, for £15 they will research a name and give you copies of what they find. I note from their site however that the records only go back to 1790, so not much further back than you have.

You don't state if you have John Crombie's and Susannah Park's death certificates, if they died in Scotland they should have the names of their parents, taking you back to approx 1790/1800 (based onthe ages of John & Susannah's children) but giving you extra names to research.

With that you could then go onto British/Irish Origins on a 30 day membership and check out the names you have to see if you get lucky.

Sorry if you've done all this already, I'm not meaning to teach granny to suck eggs, just going through the avenues I've looked at to trace my CountyDowners who came to Ayrshire in the 1850s.

Best wishes
Donna

Hi John

http://www.seanruad.com/ gives just the one match for this townland in Co. Down ....

Drumanaghan, aka Drumulcaw, 447 acre, Co. Down, Barony of Kinelarty, Civil Parish of Loughinisland, Poor Law Union of Downpatrick.

The family were Presbyterian. I have the Death Certificates for both John and Susannah but they are not of much help.

John's parents are listed as John Crumbie and ?? Crumbie, MS Crumbie

Susannah's parents are John Park and Jane Park, MS (illegible but looks like Copeltire?

As I say, not a great help but I'll keep searching away until I find them.
