Hi
I am having difficulty tracking down death/census records for several trawlermen from Aberdeen. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,
Have you checked the Aberdeen Journal? If it was in the 1800's, for a limited time you can search these records online. See the end of this long convoluted thread for the details

All the best,

Hi
Many thanks Sarah. Unfortunately it looks as if the trial was only available to folk in (academic) institutions. I have a contact number from the Aberdeen Press and Journal website which I will try on Monday.
I wondered if crews from fishing vessels had/have to be registered somewhere? Presumably folk at sea during Censuses were never registered unless in dock when I have found crews registered under"vessels". Deaths at sea were presumably registered in the home town?
Best wishes
Carolyn

The deaths at sea may appear registered twice - once in the Marine Register and once in the normal Death Register. From the "at sea" deaths, I have seen the Death Register entries have been at the port nearest to where the death occurred.
One group I have seen registered at home was three brothers who were drowned at sea, about two miles offshore from their home port (Downies, Portlethen, Kincardineshire). The deaths appear in the Marine Register, and in the local Death Register (and as RCEs to the local Death Register). One of the bodies was recovered between the time of the Death Register entries and the RCE entries.
The one that I have seen away from home was a 15-year-old cook from Cockenzie, East Lothian, who died offshore of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis (Ross & Cromarty). His death was registered in Stornoway on the information of the Procurator Fiscal, and in the Marine Register. There is no sign of him being registered at home. His body was not recovered.
All the best,
AndrewP

Dear Alan and Andrew
Many thanks for your help. I tried the link you suggested Alan and found several entries for one of my more infamous ancestors. Some other searches did not seem to highlight the search words in the text or didn't seem to have text related to my search. However overall it is a great resource. Most of my searches worked well.
Andrew I searched the "Marine Register"records on Scotland's People-no luck I am afraid. But thanks anyway.
Best wishes
