Name Change

Hello once again
Can anybody explain why a family in the 1700's Scotland would start to change their name from Kandow to Kennedy, I have tried looking on line but getting nowhere fast. Can you help.

Is Candow / Kandow Gaelic, and Kennedy being anglicised version. Have you seen any link to Jacobites? Maybe after 1745 might have had an impact depending on where they were from.

Thank you for the reply,
This family were in the Angus Glens so could very well have been Jacobite's although have yet to find their name recorded. I wondered if they could be Irish as there seems to be a strong Irish connection re DNA test results from desendents.

When do you notice the change?
As jg says a Jacobite connection often meant a change of name.

Did they move area around that time?

Other reasons could be as simple as whoever recorded the name on official documents misheard and wrote what they thought they said, or used the most common version. As few could read/write surnames have 'evolved' through the years.
Particularly as a Gaelic or Irish accent could be involved.

In 1841 he is Candaw, and in 1851 Kennedy.

Thank you all for your replies and info, thanks Allan for the link, I know this place very well and walk past quite often I see a death recorded on SP so next time I have credits I'll have a look he has to be part of the same famly as they did havel inks with Lentrathen.

Ancestry have just updated my DNA test results and now I have gone from being 48% Scottish to 92% Scottish that's a big leap, so now my origins point to the North and West (Highlands and Islands) rather than the South West (North West Ireland) not that I had a problem with being descended from "Niall of the Nine Hostages" but now I may have to curtail my Warlord Activities

In Blacks Surnames CANDOW is listed as an old name in Scotland primarily from the Angus area with variants KENDO & KENDOW. (Tazour Candow is listed as a tenant of Wester Drumme in 1474 and he cites the existance of a Candow Park in Aberdeen in 1450. In discussing the origins of the name he believes it is primarily a local name and doubts a claim that it may be from gaelic for black head (ceann dubh).

It is possible that a name change was used to associate with the more powerful Kennedy name (or for any of the other reasons already mentioned)
